About
Ellie Gill is a flower grower and artisanal dyer creating one of a kind textiles and bespoke pieces using traditional methods and natural fibres. Ellie tends to a dedicated dye garden in the Sussex countryside and uses her specialist plants to create seasonal, natural colour on cloth.
Following a career as a natural make-up artist and holistic therapist, Ellie’s passion for plants and working in harmony with nature inspired her to study horticulture and develop a natural dye studio.
Her process is slow, sustainable and gentle on the earth. Each piece she creates is a work of art – a delicate painterly impression, imbued with the life and colour of her garden.
Approach
Since the Victorian era synthetic dyes have grown in popularity. The chemicals used in this process often end up in our soil and waterways, polluting the environment and damaging the health of those involved in manufacturing textiles.
We craft unique hand-dyed textiles using natural plant dyes that are slow-crafted in small batches and have virtually no impact on the environment. We believe in honouring the earth by using traditional techniques and natural fibres such as silk, linen and wool. Our botanical dyes are developed using plants and flowers that we have grown ourself in a pesticide-free dye garden.
Process
We look to revive ancient methods of dyeing textiles with plants and believe passionately in creating textiles with beautiful, vibrant colour, which enhance the wellbeing of the wearer.
We use time-honoured processes and are passionate about celebrating the changing palette through the seasons, and creating a sense of connection to nature through our work.
We use vintage or up-cycled textiles where possible and our dye garden is free of pesticides and chemicals, with any waste produced going back into the earth through composting.
